Fabulous Find: Prima Pebbles

My Fabulous Find is Prima Pebbles. Do you like them? I will admit I wasn't quite sure how initially how I would incorporate them into my projects but now it something I think about all the time! :-)

Here is my layout showcasing a Scrap Shotz monthly kit (of course!) and those yummy Prima Pebbles!

If you look in the top right hand corner, I placed my Prima Pebbles there. When I was constructing the layout, it just "felt empty" there and these were perfect!

Since then I have gone on to make a list of how to use the pebbles more - here are my suggestions, hope you like them!

Flower centres (of course!) gosh they would be stunning!
Use them as a hyphen in a title word
Use them as the dot of a letter or punctuation
I am contemplating using them as "stepping stones" on a layout ... but I don't want to use them up so fast! LOL
and lastly, I am excited to use them as jewellery on a pendant - stay tuned for this project - it is in its idea phase now!!!

Fabulous Fundamental: Let's Talk Adhesive!

Let's talk adhesive! Over the past few weeks, I have chatted about adhesive to various scrappy friends. What I have realized is not all glue is created equal...and if I look into my scrappy supplies, I have a diverse selection! There is no one glue fits all scenario at my house!

I wanted to share my favorites and what I use them for...

Tombow Mono Liquid Glue: My personal favorite liquid glue. Why? It cleans up easily with water; it does not wrinkle or destroy the paper I am adhering; it works on wood, fabric and paper and it lasts a long time. Fabulous value!

Tsukineko - The Essential Glue: I love the glue itself and the glue pad. This duo is perfect for foiling and glittering detailed images on your projects.

Clearsnap - Glue Gloss: OK I'll admit it - I bought this glue initially because it is just SO darn cute! It has however become a staple in my stash. The sweet mascara like applicator is perfect for adhering light weight ribbon and twine. I keep a tube in my toolbox at all times!

Stix2 Glue Gun Refills or the Glue Glider: This is the work horse of my scrappy escapades. I use this glue 90% of the time on my projects.

Dotto Dots - Repositionable: So I must have commitment issues but this repositionable dotto dots is a must for me. As I work, I like to temporarily tack down my work and this fantastic product does the trick. Dotto dots is a pre-ordered item so let Sandy know if you are interested. For me, there is nothing else!

So there you have it, my faves? And best of all, they can all be found in the store, just my girl, Sandy:-)

Simply Smashing - Part 3

Have you caught the Smash Wave??? Smash books are hotter than ever. No matter where you go, there are papers, clips, die cuts and more that coordinate with a "notebook" which doubles as a Smash book of course!

Here is my Smash book!

Suffice it to say, I am in serious love with Smash books, so much so, that I have 4 on the go! And each of my daughters has their own Smash book too!

Fabulous Fundamental: Combining Pattern Paper

Do you love pattern paper? I adore pattern paper, so much so that I have amassed quite a collection! As well, I find it hard to choose which pattern paper to use on a project when there are oh so many to choose from! So rather than choosing, I have taken a more "collaborative" approach...a little of everything! LOL

Here are my primary governing principles for using multiple pieces of pattern paper on a project-

"All in moderation" - when I use multiple pieces of pattern paper, I use small amounts of the various papers so the project does not look confused and overwhelming. I carefully craft my layout so that the photos take centre stage and the pattern papers complement the photos.

"Same but different" - to blend the various pattern papers in a pleasing manner, I choose hues and patterns that have the same value, so no one paper or pattern dominates.

"Why invent the wheel?" - scrapbooking time is precious in my house. As such, I do not want to spend precious time finding the perfect coordinating pattern papers so I use manufacturer collections as much as possible. They are brilliant! But better yet...about 98% of my layouts are created using the SSZ monthly kits; Sandy is genius!

Now let me give you an example or two!

Scrap Shotz Project 12 of 2012

Welcome! Welcome! Welcome to Scrap Shotz's version of Project 12...in 2012! It has a nice ring to it; doesn't it??? :-)

Throughout the year, I'll post sketches or inspiration for you to create a project. Using the sketch or inspiration, you may create a layout or an altered item or a card or a mini album or...or...whatever your heart desires. As you can see, Project 12 at Scrap Shotz is wide open; we just want to inspire you to create.

The fine print: I'll post the sketch or inspiration the 2nd Tuesday of each month - so you will have one month to create and link your project to me. I will make a draw for a prize and announce the winner when I post the next sketch or inspiration.

For the month of January, I chose a sketch from Valerie Salmon of Got Sketch? This sketch is very versatile as you may scrap either 1 photo or up to 8 photos! This sketch is also easily adaptable to a 2-pager by creating a mirror image for the 2nd page.

Here is my interpretation featuring the December Scrap Shotz monthly kit. Notice I created a mirror image of the sketch, used circles instead of squares and changed up the journaling.

Supplies: Bazzill (cardstock); Simple Stories (pattern paper, die cut stickers, alphas, mini alphas); May Arts (twine); Close to my Heart (red gems): Versamagic (chalk ink); Copic (black spica)

Here are a couple of close-ups of the layout and how I made the sketch and kit my own.

Personally I like a lot of texture and dimension on my layouts. This can be easily created using pop-dots to raise some elements. Another technique is to "decorate" the die cut stickers.

I also used my Copic spica pen to add a "frame" around the layout. The wonderful trait of the Spica pen is its subtle glitter of the ink - it was perfect for my Christmassy layout!

Challenge: January - Organization

January is traditionally a month of organization so this month's challenge is, of course, Organization!

My scrappy organization tip is organize your cardstock by colour and then by texture. This sounds like a no-brainer but believe it or not, I used to put all my cardstock into one big giant pile! Whenever I needed cardstock, it took away precious scrappy time to find the right hue and texture. *blush*

Can a girl ever have too much paper? This glitter cardstock from Best Creations is one of my all time favorites. It cuts like a dream on my trimmer and the glitter does not leave a trail throughout my house. It comes in an array of dreamy colours. An assortment of these under the tree would be well received!

This calendar has alot of bang for its buck! It's beautiful and practical - love it!

Fabulous Fundamental: Gift Wrapping Ideas

Today I am starting a series on interesting gift wrapping ideas using your scrappy supplies!

First up is a series of tags made with the dregs of a Scrap Shotz kit!

Supplies: Tag base (Staples); Fancy Pants (pattern paper); Scenic Route (chipboard stars); Pink Paislee (pixie stix glitter); Tattered Angels glimmer mist (Pearl); American Crafts (rub ons); garland (source unknown); ribbon (May Arts)

Now what about using the tag for a gift bag? That bag is from My Minds Eye and a former add-on to a Scrap Shotz monthly kit. Same supplies as above.

My gift bag is filled with homemade nuts and bolts - yum! I happen to have 3 more sheets so I'll be filling them with Nuts and Bolts and gingersnaps for my neighbours this year.

Fabulous Find: Sizzix Pillow Box

December is here and you know what that means, right? Yup Christmas is just around the corner and it is a time for scrappers to showcase their talents!

Today, I have an adorable pillow box to share. If you are like me, I am always on the hunt for interesting but gorgeous ways to package gifts.

Well look no further - consider this pillow box! It's die is from Sixxiz and cuts like butter! It literally takes minutes to assemble and how you adorn it is completely up to you! On this example, I cut cream Bazzill cardstock, spritzed it with Goosebumps and let it dry. Then I used that luscious glitter cardstock Sandy carries for the cumberbund and added some Sixxiz 3D flowers (also a die). Those snowflakes are diecut from a Cuttlebug die too! All this took me less than 10 minutes!

The possibilities are endless - I made 25 for an advent countdown but it is perfect for jewellery or sweet gifts!

Fabulous Fundamental: Mixing Manufacturers

If you are like me, you have little bits and pieces of paper, photos, chipboard, alphas and so on winking at you from your desk. Of course all these pieces are from different manufacturers!

Well, I decided to do something about those bits (mostly so I would not have to re-file them! :-) ) Usually I find it quicker and easier to create with a specific manufacturer line but today I threw caution to the wind!

Here is my very quick layout using Pink Paislee, Imaginesce and American Crafts!

Supplies: Pink Paislee (pattern paper, die cuts); Imaginesce (chipboard); American Crafts (rub ons, alphas, pen), ribbon (source unknown), googly eyes (source unknown)

So I encourage you to mix and match between manufacturers - you may be surprised by the results (like I was!)

Fabulous Find: Prima Printery Canvas Resist

Gosh, there are so many new scrappy items in the store right now; it was SO hard to choose my Fabulous Find! But I finally decided upon the Prima Printery Canvas Resist! They are absolutely genius, in my opinion.

When you first open the package, you are overcome with adorable and versatile shapes. Then you notice they are a creamy white. And that is the beauty of these delightful accents! Because they are creamy white and made of canvas, a porous and absorbent material, you can colour them to any colour you desire. You can use the full Tattered Angels line or Clearsnap mists or any type of inks (alcohol or dye) or even gesso and paint…as you can see the options are endless! The drying time depends on the medium you used to colour the accent.

Here is how I used the Prima Printery Canvas Resist accents...

Supplies: Bazzill (cardstock); Authentique (pattern papers, brads); EK Success border punch; Heidi Swapp (black gem oval); Tattered Angels glimmer mist; Clearsnap Smooch Spritz; Goosebumps; American Crafts (alphas); stitching

To blend the canvas accent with the Authentique papers (September Scrap Shotz kit), I used Tattered Angels (denim, Irridescent gold, sand) and the Clear Snap Smooch (Navy Twinkle) Spritz to initially colour the floral bouquet. After it dried, I liberally sprayed it with Tattered Angels pearl mist and a touch of Goosebumps. Then I added some Kaiser pearls for dimension.

Welcome to my second post on the uber popular Smash Books! What I so love about Smash Books is you can tailor it to your own personal needs and anything goes!

Let me show you a peak of Lorraine' stunning book! Let me start with the first page - I love love love that Lorraine created a "dedication." Fabulous idea...which I have to lift!

Adorable pictures complemented by various stickers and hand written notes - fab!

A personal favorite of mine are the notepads made specifically for the Smash books. There are oodles of different themed notebooks and Scrap Shotz has several of them!

The washi tape is the perfect complement to attach the pieces of memorabilia to the pages.

Crop Challenge: Morning Glory

Good morning - feeling a bit groggy from all the cocktails? :-) LOL

My challenge is to complete this fun, fast and frivolous make n take - something to dress up your decor for your cocktail party.

My cocktail is called the Morning Glory, perfect for the morning after! Here is the recipe!

1 1/2 oz vodka
1/2 oz dark creme de cacao
2 oz light cream
1/4 tspgrated nutmeg

Combine the vodka, creme de cacao and cream in a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice cubes. Shake well, and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a dusting of nutmeg, and serve.

Start with 6 paper bags, the gusseted ones.

Fold the bottom of a bag in on itself. Cut above the lower fold, removing the bag's bottom. Trim the top into a petal shape.

Punch a hole about 1/4 inch from the bottom. Repeat process with five more bags. Apply double-sided tape to the front edges of a bag. Place another bag on top, and repeat to stack all of the bags. Draw a length of string through the hole in the stack; knot it loosely. (Loosely is very important!)

Pull the top and bottom bags around to form a flower shape and join the end petals with double-sided tape.

Suspend your completed paper bag flowers by string.

Voila! Cute, isn't it?

Crop Challenge: Fudgicle Frozen Cocktail

New to this online crop is blog challenges for the crop! Enjoy!!!

Have you ever had a Fudgesicle Frozen Cocktail? It's like a Fudgesicle for grownups!

Here is the recipe:

Start with your blender and 1/2 cup of ice. Add 1 1/2 oz of Vodka or Chocolate Vodka, 1/2 oz of Dark Creme de Cacao, 1 tablespoon of Chocolate Syrup and a scoop of Chocolate Ice Cream. Blend everything until it's nice and smooth. You can add a bit of Milk or a bit more ice cream to adjust the thickness of your drink. Garnish with a popsicle stick and serve.

My Fudgesicle challenge is to create a project that has been inspired by the Fudgesicle Frozen Cocktail. So you could create a Christmas card or a winter themed layout or even a project that primarily has chocolate tones!

Scrap Shotz Online Crop - Charity Chaser

MADD Canada was formed in 1990 to create a national network of victims and concerned citizens working to stop impaired driving and to support victims of this violent crime. The organization's national presence and its local contributions are a direct result of the many people who have stepped forward in fighting impaired driving -- to make their communities' roads safer and to lend a hand to victims and their families.

Millions of red ribbons are distributed each year as part of MADD Canada’s longest running public awareness program, Project Red Ribbon. Their slogan of "Tie one on for safety" is widely recognized nationally.

Scrap Shotz has decided to support the efforts of MADD for this crop. In order to make a difference, all you have to do is this challenge:

TIE ONE ON! It's as easy as that, create a project which includes a tied piece of ribbon, string or twine on it somewhere. For each person that participates, Scrap Shotz will donate $5 to MADD Canada. There's no chasing, tagging, dibs'ing or lifting this time, just create a project as specified above and post it here. Simple, right? Oh and be sure to grab your blinkie at the bottom once you've participated!

Simply Smashing: Part 1

Have you succumbed to the Smash Book craze??? You know those absolutely adorable books with the coordinating accessories? Well, at Scrap Shotz, many of us have been smashed! Over the next few weeks, I'd like to show you what we have been smashing; I hope you will join me for this simply smashing good time! :-)

Here is an excerpt of Rosie's smash book; I drool every time I look at it!

Sandy carries several different versions of the actual Smash book - when you see them in the store, don't think, just grab them! These sweet books are a hot commodity and are very hard to find...anywhere!

One of the reasons why I adore these books so much is that the Smash Book is a fantastic way to use up all those little left over rubs, chipboard, labels and so on. Combined with the Smash book accessories, your book is stunning and a true reflection of your personality. As you will see in Rosie's books, she has combined the dregs of previous Scrap Shotz kits with the Smash book accents!

My personal favorite is the Smash Tape - it is easily torn, looks amazing on the page...and has THE cutest black and white polka dot pattern!

Copics, Copics, Copics!!!

At the recent Scrap Shotz crop, it was clear that the Copics craze was live and well. There were lots of croppers working on their Christmas cards and I had lots of croppers try their hand with copics at the Make and Take table.

One of the croppers had a wonderful storage solution for her copics. She purchased a padded box from Homesense and cut down a ceiling lighting tile to insert each copic into. I thought it was brilliant; don't you? Thank you Linda M for sharing :-)

At the make and take table, we coloured images like these -

It was lovely to share my love of copics with others :-)

Fabulous Fundamental - Scripted Flowers

Awhile ago, I looked at my stash the other day in search of THE perfect flower accent. Do you think I could find one??? No! It didn't have the script I felt would be SO complementary to my layout nor did I have the right colour. So what is a girl to do??? Yup, make one! :-)

So I thought I would share how to make my version of a scripted flower!

Start with a Prima flower - any colour will do depending on the glimmer mist you choose - in my case, this little flower was already sitting on my desk smiling at me :-)

Then stamp a petite but simple design directly onto your flower. I used Memento ink but Staz On would certainly work too! Dye based inks do not work as well with this project as they tend to react with the spray mists.

Let the stamped flower dry.

Choose your mists and gently mist over the stamped flower.

Dry thoroughly.

Adorn as desired. Here I dipped a brad into some Tattered Angels glam as I did not have any red brads for the centre.

Fabulous Find: Imaginsce Petal Pusher

Hello! We're back from the Canadian Scrapbooker's Carnival at the University of Calgary; what a fantastic time! And a big thank you to everyone that came by our booth - it is SO nice to meet "online" faces as well as new faces:-) I hope to see you all at the October 15 crop too!

Today I have a wonderful Fabulous Find. To be entirely truthful, this product surprised me with how amazing it was. At first glance, I thought..."Really? What is so special about this pink thing???"

I mean, look at it, I mean really look at it. It's a pink stick with a ball on one end a blunt needle on another. Well, let me just declare now that I was dead wrong; this tool is a girl's dream!!! Let me show why!

I have long admired those 3D flowers that are all the rage now. And I have tried numerous times to easily construct one to adorn my projects...unsuccessfully mind you. Well, no more!

With the Spellbinders die or the Sizzix die, I easily make flowers as shown below in SECONDS! Yes, I just said SECONDS, not minutes or hours.

Want to know how? Start with a die cut similar to that from the Spellbinders and Sizzix dies linked above. Insert the outer end of the die cut into the notch of the Petal Roller. Then begin rolling towards the INSIDE of the die cut.

Don't worry about it being perfectly wound layers - just follow the curve of the die cut until you reach the middle. Give your rolled paper a "finger hug" and remove it from the Petal Roller. Place it on the table and let it "unwind" slightly. Place adhesive on the middle where the petal is slightly larger. The adhesive will gently hold all the flower layers together.

If you want to loosen the layers, you the ball end of the Petal Roller for some slight adjustments.

Now enjoy your beautiful flower! At this point, you can spray with some glimmer mist or glimmer glam or even better some Goosebumps (I'll be blogging about this later this week!) Once you mist the flower, you can "shape" your flower petals too!

Other options that I have tried include dipping your flower in glimmer glam which coats and stiffens the flower; so perfect for headbands! As well, I have cut flower dies from thin material that I have starched and stiffened, for example, blue jean fabric, light weight suede and even organza or tulle ribbons! The possibilities are endless!

The kids have all gone back to school and fall is upon us. There are oodles of goodies in the store this week to savour those first day of school memories.

My favorite is the Fancy Pants - Off to School line. The papers are gorgeous as well as versatile; plus you can't beat the quality and beauty of the Fancy Pants products.

And I can't forget the coordinating die cuts!

Or the adorable coordinating chipboard accents!

And just for fun, I am going to suggest these delightful sparklets by Kaisercraft! Don't they coordinate oh so well? :-)

Scrap Shotz Summer Reveal

Can you believe we are in mid-July? That is full-fledged summer in my books!!! That is indeed something to celebrate and even more to celebrate is the Summer Scrap Shotz Reveal.

Take a look at what the Design Team has created with the Scrap Shotz Summer Kit titled Slice of Summer.

Lorraine created a delightful summer layout! Darling pictures are beautifully accented with the intricate fussy cutting from one of the kit papers!

And Wendy whipped up this yummy 2-pager! Don't you want to jump into that pool??? Love the cute clothesline and the journal spot use!

Jen crafted this gorgeous layout on a Calgary tradition - Stampede! What I love the most is how many pictures she was able to include and not have the layout feeling cluttered. As well, did you see those dimensional flowers? I am personally dying to use those accents from the kit!

And Laura designed this beauty! I love her ingenious use of the borders included in our kits! Those accents are fabulous accents too!

And Maggie, our Guest Designer, created this gem! The twine clothesline ties are adorable; the sweet photo as a flower centre and the layout title is perfect.

Our first sketch from the lovely Valerie Salmon is

Here is my interpretation below - my layout is based on the sketch turned 90 degrees. The versatility of sketches astounds me as you can rotate it, use a mirror image of it or even select a portion of the sketch!

I chose a subtle tone on tone look for my layout. The flower accents were inspired by the groovy flowers on my daughter's helmet. I layered several pattern paper circles from the same line of BasicGrey papers.

Supplies: Basic Grey (pattern paper, die cut stickers, chipboard accents, alphas); EK Success (circle punch, flower punch); Versamagic (chalk ink); KI Memories (puffy butterflies)

Hello hello hello!!! We've had a small hiatus on the Scrap Shotz blog but we are baaaaack! And what a great way to start than with a post highlighting the Scrap Shotz June Monthly kit reveal.

This month's kit, All Aboard, features the entire Destination Line from Simple Stories. It includes all 12 papers, alpha sheet, fundamentals sticker sheet, Tim Holtz Distress Stain, some Kaiser wood buttons, ribbon and of course 8 sheets of cardstock.

Fabulous Friday - Anything But Challenge

It isn't Friday but I wanted to post Gail's beautiful and awesome challenge! (Last week, blogger was down due to some technical difficulties.)

Here is Gail...

For this challenge, I decided to take 2 pieces of 12 x 12 paper that I would normally have used for a scrapbooking layout and use them instead to make a card. I used the Pink Paislee – Daily Junque paper found in the Scrap Shotz store.

I used the lower left corner of one the sheets for the background and then cut various elements out the other piece and layered them on top. This is my result:

So I challenge you to use 2 pieces of coordinating scrapbooking paper and cut out different elements from it to make a card.

Note: I used plain cardstock and glued on the decorated piece to give extra weight.

Well, I am sure you will agree that this is just one of the cutest cards you have ever seen!

Chromotherapy Challenge!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good morning ladies! Are you ready for the weekend? Well if you some some scrapping time this weekend, give Lorraine's fabulous chromotherapy challenge a go!

Here is her challenge....

For the Fabulous Friday challenge today, I wanted to not only supply you with an inspiring color theme, but to also tell you about a design rule that you can use on all your pages. Here is the color pallet that I am working with.

This was a paint swatch on the Better Homes and Gardens website, colors that were suggested for painting a balanced, well-designed room. I noticed that the size of the paint lids were all different, and thought of the Gallon/Quart/Pint rule. We can use this rule to balance our layouts! I'm not sure where I first heard of the rule, but when I googled it, an excerpt of the book "Teach Yourself Visually Scrapbooking" by Rebecca Ludens and Jennifer Schmidt came up, and explained it this way:

"Create color balance on your layouts by following the gallon, quart, pint rule of thumb. Basically all you need to do is select the color you want to be the most dominant on your page. This is your "gallon" color - generally it becomes your background color.

Pick one more color for your main accent color, or "quart" color. Use only half as much of this color as you use of your "gallon" color.

Then, select the third color - your "pint" color - and use just a bit of it here and there to accent the layout. Again, use only half as much of this color on the layout as you used of the "quart" color."

Here is my layout, using the above color pallet and considering the GQP Rule.

Your challenge today is to think about the Gallon/Quart/Pint rule on your layout. You can use the colors shown here or choose your own. Upload a link here or show us your layout in the Scrapshotz gallery! I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with this basic design rule of thumb!

Fabulous Friday - Anything But Challenge

Welcome, welcome, welcome on this Fabulous Friday!!! We have a wonderful challenge from the marvellous Melissa!

One of my favorite things to do while I am “scrappy surfing” the internet is to take a sneak peek into the scrap spaces of others. I love photos people post of where they create, and it doesn’t matter to me if it is someone famous - like Ali Edwards or Jennifer McGuire – or if it is the scrapper down the street sharing their space. Each of these rooms has wonderful storage ideas and a personality of their own.

One of the things that I am typically envious of is how “decorated” some of the scrap spaces are. My scrap room is bright and big, I am very lucky there, but it is largely functional. It just contains my hoard of supplies tucked into this organizer or that one, there is nothing to reflect my personality. I adore my space, but it is quite plain. I decided to change that with this week’s challenge!

I decided to make this wall art for my challenge. The pink paper is from everyone’s favorite manufacturer, Echo Park – one of the patterns in their Be Mine collection. The letters are die cut from smooth Bazzill cardstock.

My challenge to you this week is to create something beautiful for your creative space. We can all use a little more pretty in our lives, right?? Go nuts, just make something for YOU!!

Fabulous Find - Echo Park

Fabulous Friday - Inspired By Challenge

On this Fabulous Friday, we have a wonderful Inspired By challenge from the lovely Gail.

As many of you know, I collect Tammy dolls. So I’d like you to be inspired by my original Tammy doll, just like I was.

Tammy came out in the 1960s and was a competitor for Barbie. She was marketed as a “sweet sixteen, girl next door” type of doll.

For my layout, I used the colour turquoise (in her original outfit) and a photo of me when I was “sweet sixteen”. This was the only photo I could find so I tried to “girly” it up some since I look like such a tomboy (which I wasn’t). I used the fabulous BoBunny Gabrielle papers found in the Scrap Shotz store.

So let’s see how Tammy inspires you....whether you do a layout in turquoise, “sweet sixteen”, the 1960s, dolls/toys or something completely different. I would love to see what you come up with.

Warmth, sunshine, walks, cycling and camping are just around the corner. With the warmer weather, we struggle to find the time to create. To help you out, we've introduced the Shotz Sketches!!! Twice a month, I'll post a challenge and an interpretation or two for you to be inspired by. I hope you will join me!!!

April Scrap Shotz Monthly Kit Reveal

The April Scrap Shotz monthly kit is titled, Timeless Beauty, and a beauty it is!

Our April kit includes all 10 patterned Papers, the cut outs, the die cut paper and 8 BZ cardstock in Crimson, French Vanilla, Java and Kraft. Included also is the 12x12 chipboard, the combo sticker, the trinkets, jewels and noteworthy journal book. We topped it off with Kaiser rub on "moments", smooch ink in mocha, three yard of ribbon and a Kaiser Flourish. The kit is absolutetly stunning and should give you product to make numerous layouts!!!

From Laura is this gorgeous layout in her characteristic style. The accordion flowers and rose beautifully complement the photo.

Then we have a striking layout on the die cut paper from Lorraine. You sure have done justice to that photo Lorraine!

Our Wendy created this wonderful layout - look at how she used the wooden embellishment! It's adorable!

From Jen, we have a heritage flavoured layout. Isn't this a jaw dropper???

From Gail, a beautiful asymmetric card which is a stunner!

Hi there Laurel here. My favorite challenges are sketch challenges so I love when it is my turn to do the Blueprint challenge for you. I borrowed this sketch from Liz at The Scrappiest and used some Bo Bunny Ad Lib paper to do a layout about my daughter and her best friend.

Fabulous Find - BoBunny Petal Pushers

BoBunny is a company that I am smitten with! Their lines over the past 18 months has me wanting more, more and oh so much more! LOL One of my most recent favorite lines is Petal Pushers (...and I also have some Gabrielle waiting for some love!)

Fabulous Friday - Anything But Challenge

We are so fortunate to have Stevie host today's Fabulous Friday - Anything But challenge!

Today I thought I’d change things up a bit and do a photography tutorial. We’re going to learn how to use an 18% Grey Card. A grey card is a tool that photographers use to adjust and get the correct white balance in a photo. These cards are very inexpensive to buy –mine came in a 2 pack (8x10) at my local camera store for $14.99.

You may say “My camera has Automatic White Balance, isn’t that good enough?”. Yes, MOST of the time, but there are times when even your camera is fooled. This happens mainly at night when the camera is reading exposure and trying to focus in a low light situation. For these times, and any other time you want the correct white balance, a grey card comes in handy. A grey card works with cameras that will allow you set a CUSTOM WHITE BALANCE. This is the easiest, BUT if your camera doesn’t have this setting, then don’t worry. We can get around that. Check your manual on how to set it.

You will see in this first photo of my ancient teddy bear, the colour is off. I shot this in daylight on a white sheet. Notice that the sheet appears blue and the bear, even though he is tan, has a blue tint to him?

It’s very easy to correct this. Take your Grey Card and place it beside whatever it is you wish to photograph. Make sure that you are focused on the grey card. In this second photo, you can see that the tones are correct. Don’t erase this photo!

Now you can set your custom white balance on your camera, if it has this feature. If it doesn’t, just save this last photo and continue to take your photos.

You can see that my teddy bear is the correct shade and my sheet is now white.

If your camera doesn’t have a custom white balance feature, then open up your photo editing software. I use PSE9, so directions are for that. Open up your photo with your grey card in it. Go to Enhance/Adjust lighting levels. This will open a dialogue box. You will see three eyedroppers. Click on the grey one (in the middle) and then click on the grey card in your photo. Like magic your photo will adjust to the correct white balance. If you don’t want to buy a grey card, I have found that the Bazzill “thunder” grey cardstock is very close in colour.

Give it a try!

I lOVE how Rosie is able to capture the "everyday" moments on her pages... she has such a knack for scrapping nothing, and in effect something very special! This is one of those things... I love this set of photos and how it depicts so many of our homes on a regular day... thanks Rosie!

We have a Fabulous Inspired By challenge from the lovely Laura today. She calls it "Words!" I am SO intrigued by this; aren't you?

Every time you open your mouth and speak they come out.....these brilliant ways of communicating....these awesome concepts of expression

Whether you chat chitchat, confab, consult, converse, have a discussion, talk or a tête-à-tête, we all use them....some words we use more than others....

Do you have a saying that you are always using? Do your kids constantly spout something that makes you laugh or grates on your nerves? Is there another way you and your teen or preteen say 'I love you' so they don't get embarrassed? Are there sentences that you or someone you love routinely say? I want you to be inspired by the words you speak. To use something you or someone you love say a lot as your inspiration of your project.

Every night when my boys got to bed we say to each other "I love you around the world and back again, forever and a day' and I decided to use that on this layout.

Can't wait to see what you create.

"A Night at the Oscars" Charity Chaser

For this crop, Scrap Shotz is proud to be supporting Habitat For Humanity (http://www.habitat.ca).

Through volunteer labour, efficient management and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Habitat for Humanity builds and rehabilitates safe, decent and affordable houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit and are financed with affordable, no-interest mortgages. The homeowners' monthly mortgage payments go into a revolving fund, which is used to build more homes.

Habitat for Humanity is a hand up, not a hand out. In addition to mortgage payments, each homeowner invests hundreds of hours of their own labour, called "sweat equity”, into the building of their home and the homes of others.

Our Mission

To mobilize volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promoting homeownership as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty.

The Roving Reporter - CHA Winter 2011 Los Angeles Part II

I am SO excited to share Connie's second post on her time at CHA Winter 2011.

Prima had a ton of new things – papers, embellishments, trims…… I really was intrigued by these canvas mistable products – whole sheets and die cut shapes. Lots of potential fun with these and Smooch Spritz or Tattered Angels mists….

I love the colours and themes that Bo Bunny came out with – a fun boy rocket set and a beautiful vintagey timepiece collection. Gorgeous.

And last, but not least, there will be lots of new Spellbinders dies you will want to pick up. I don’t have a picture, but Foliage and Carnation Creations are on my list of must-haves. This photo is of the owners of the company with the new Grand Caliber diecutting machine for extra large nesties.

Fabulous Find - Canadian Scrapbooker Spring 2011

Don't you love holding a magazine in your hands, especially a scrapbook magazine? Yeah, I thought so! Me too! Nothing is more enjoyable than soaking in the tub surrounded by yummy candles, slowly reading a scrappy magazine.

One of the magazines I love is Canadian Scrapbooker. I love that it features a lot of Canadian talent, that it is created right here in Alberta, that the people behind the magazine are AWESOME and that there are A LOT of Scrap Shotz girls in each issue!!!! I love it, love it, love it!!!

Fabulous Fundamental - The Sew Easy

Whoo hoo! Today we have a double-double (for all you Tim Horton fans!!!) - a Roving Reporter post from Lynnette Parent and a Fabulous Fundamental on the Sew Easy tool. This hot tool is a must-have in a scrapbooker and cardmaker's toolkit. Read onwards to read Lynnette's article.

I've always loved the look of stitching on layouts but have never had the urge to pull out my sewing machine and give it a whirl. I thought it would be way too much hassle to deal with my very heavy machine. And what if, after spending hours on a layout, I wreck it by sewing crookedly?!

Then I saw the Sew Easy. I immediately thought this simple little tool could finally be what I was looking for.

I went whole hog and purchased the handle, seven heads, extra needles, the pad and the red thread package. I gave it to myself for Christmas :-)

Here are a few things I've figured out:

- It is very easy to keep a straight line with the heads. I had thought it might be tricky but it really isn't.

- The heads are very easy to change and they lock in securely.

- You can use each head for at least 3 different looking stitches - very cool.

- You should use their custom mat as it keeps the points sharp. And the mat is over 12 inches long so you can go end to end on your layout without needing to move it.

- With some paper, if you push too hard, you make a crease and with others, if you don't push hard enough, you won't perforate the paper. It takes a little practice.

- Bazzill doesn't perforate well.

- I've been using up old embroidery floss (3 strands at a time). The Sew Easy thread looks nice too.

- You can use a pen instead of thread to do the "stitching".

On this layout I drew pencil lines with a ruler and used the simple single stitch head to punch the holes. I found it fairly easy to lift the head up and place it down again at the corners so I could match up the stitches.

I used the scalloped edge head for this one. As there are TWO layers of Bazzill here, there was no way the holes were going to perforate all the way through. I used the head more to MARK the placement of the holes and then used my piercing tool to actually make the holes. It only took a few extra moments for this step.

I finished the scallop off by putting a brad on each point.

Here is a card I made using the starburst head. I didn't NEED to use the piercing tool but it is easier to sew if the holes are larger.

Another very simple card.

With this layout I just wanted a touch of stitching that would blend with the colours of the photos. I found it a little difficult to get the holes to mark on the plaid paper AND the cardstock and had to go over it twice. I also had to use the piercing tool as there are two layers of cardstock.

This time I wanted to see if I could easily follow a curved edge. I traced the heart and then used the simple stitch head. It was a little harder to stay right on the pencil line but in the end I think it turned out great. I did each side of the heart differently so you can see how it looks with the stitches open and closed.

When I took the heads out of their packaging I kept each cardboard insert as they have samples of the different stitching you can do with each head. I put the heads in a little tin and keep everything together with an elastic band. I am considering purchasing the new case they came out with though.

Chloe Hill came up with this VERY innovative way to store her Sew Easy and Brad maker. I think it is so cool. If I can find a place in my scraproom I may do this!

All in all, I think the Sew Easy is a great investment and a tool that you can use over and over. They recently came out with 8 new heads and all kinds of new threads so I can see where my scrapbooking dollars will be going!

The Roving Reporter - CHA Winter 2011 Los Angeles

CHA - just hearing those initials makes my heart beat just a wee bit faster! It's a dream of mine to attend CHA. Wouldn't it be divine to be surrounded by all those new releases from all your old favorite manufacturers and the new up and comers???? Yeah, I thought so!

We are SO SO SO lucky to have Connie Nichol give us an insider report as our Roving Reporter during her recent trip to the 2011 Winter CHA. Here is the first of a 2-part series from Connie.

Usually the winter Craft and Hobby Trade show is held in Anaheim, so being in downtown Los Angeles was a bit of a change. The show seemed smaller than last year, with fewer exhibitors and smaller booth sizes, but rumour had it that the Los Angeles convention center was more costly for the vendors. Or perhaps it was the fact that the economic climate in the US is still largely not very good.

Anyway, despite this, in two full days, I still did not manage to see all the booths. There were some lovely new products and I took several hundred pictures. None of these photos are particularly good because the lighting is a bit iffy in many booths, but you’ll get the idea. Banners were everywhere, both decorating booths and incorporated into new products. Circus themed paper was big. Plenty of bird cages, bird themed stuff and botanical paper and lots of pleated paper rosettes and vintage looking resin flowers. And there were also plenty of new ‘boy’ lines. Here are photos of some of my favourites from the new releases:

Webster’s Pages had some great new lines. I particularly loved Spring Market and Yacht Club. As a fanatical gardener and a recent tourist to Nova Scotia, I need both of these in my collection.

There’s always a big crowd around the Graphic 45 booth. It’s simply gorgeous!!!

Some very cute stamps by MyStamp Box, a Canadian company (as shown by the amazing Jackie Ludlage from Canadian Scrapbooker magazine).

KaiserCraft always has gorgeous products – these were two of my favourite releases, although I realize now that I don’t know what these lines are called.

Glitz Designs had some lovely new releases. This was my favourite.

Nice stuff from Echo Park!!

And of course Tim Holtz had some new Sizzix dies, embossing folders and embellishments. I am looking forward to getting these black plastic snap- off letters. They look similar to the Heidi Swapp ones that were sold in pink and blue years ago, but much cooler.

Fabulous Friday - Anything But Challenge

Hello, hello, hello Ladies! On this wonderful Friday, the lovely Ruby has created a fabulous Anything But challenge for us! Here it is...

I have coloured the canvas with 3 shades of dye inks. I found that daubers worked well to do this. I applied water in a mister over the inked sections of the canvas. The inks started to move around on their own. I let the canvas dry and took a look at the way the ink moved. Just played with the inks , canvas and water until I liked the result. After the canvas was fully dried, I used the Unity stamps (Donna Downey) to apply the designs. In order to have a firm base to stamp on , I used the cutting boards from my Cuttlebug for support. The ink used was Rich Cocoa by Memento. After all my stamping was done, I let the canvas dry for several days. To finish the canvas, I added embellishments, Ric Rack ribbon and the distressed frame.

Gosh Ruby, this is gorgeous! Thanks for your challenge!

Have you seen this???? Yes this IS the February Scrap Shotz Monthly kit titled "Spring is Coming."

This kit is a beaut. Check out the stunning projects the Design Team wow'ed us with this month.

From Laurel, we have this whimsical layout. The kit is chock-ful of fabulous corrugated die cut shapes.

Ruby created this stunning card. The corrugated die cut shapes are easily adorned with the gems also included in the kit.

Jennifer created this gorgeous layout using the stunning shaped pattern paper and a few of the other pattern papers included in the kit. How can you resist those October Afternoon mini alphas??? (I know I can't!)

How can you resist the jaw dropping layout from Laura? I love how she used so many of the pattern papers of the kit. And that banner is the perfect accessory to her photo!

Stephanie's layout is a timeless beauty. Those 3D butterflies (a kit add-on) are a delicious accent to her layout. Don't miss the adorable die cut person in the corner - just too cute!

Included in this month's kit is a fantastic envelope mini album. Here is an excerpt from Rebecca's mini album. Stunning was the first word that came to my mind!

Fabulous Find - American Crafts Ribbon Roses and SEI Juliette

Do you mix and match product lines between manufacturers? I do but I will admit that I like to stay within a manufacturer's line. Why mess with perfection? However, there are some products that just seem to work with almost anything. One such product is the American Crafts ribbon roses which debuted with the Dear Lizzy line.

I recently paired this luscious and oh so versatile American Crafts ribbon with SEI's Juliette line.

Supplies: SEI (pattern papers, die cut stickers, alphas); American Crafts (ribbon); Prima (pearls); BasicGrey (chipboard alphas)

Although the ribbon "looks" bulky, it isn't! This layout fits nicely into a page protector in an album. The ribbon squishes down ever so softly yet still maintains its floral shape.

Simply adorning the ribbon roses with pearls adds a touch of elegance.

I can honestly say that the pictures do not do the papers and accessories justice. Several of the papers, die cut stickers and alphas are glittered. The colours are soft and muted but the glitter adds a subtle sparkle.

So what do you think? Don't you think these products are gorgeous and uber versatile?

Good morning Everyone! It's a fabulous Fabulous Friday, don't you think? Today we have an Inspired by challenge from the lovely Laurel.

Hi there, Laurel here. I was browsing the Anthropologie website one day when I saw this pretty apron.

It made me think of the October Afternoon Modern Homemaker paper so I decided to make a card for my mom. I used both the Modern Homemaker and the Fly A Kite papers on this. This could be a 'just because' card, a thank you card or even a birthday card.

I would love to see how this apron inspires you.
